These computer programes, together with their associated workbooks and Instructor's Guide represent a novel way in which to greatly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of laboratory class teaching. By utilising computer-based laboratories it is possible to give even the largest of introductory classes a sound introduction to the use of the experimental method in psychology. The essence of this approach is the |cafeteria-system| in which a small number of computers are made available for students to book time-slots when convenient and to run themselves or volunteers as subjects in an experiment. All the introduction and explanation required by the students is supplied in the laboratory workbook or on the computer screen and there need be no staff involvement at this stage. Associated with each experiment are computer-presented multiple-choice questions and short-note questions which are to be found in the workbook. If the multiple-choice assessment is used, the computer will mark each student's answers, while if the short-note format is followed, a brief instructor's marking guide is provided to facilitate marking by demonstrators or postgraduate students. @BT2 = While it is possible to use all the experiments in each workbook as a complete course, the individual experiments are independant of each other and can be used in any desired combination to allow integration with an existing course.

Energy and the Wealth of Nations PDF By:Charles Hall,Kent Klitgaard Published on 2011-10-27 by Springer Science & Business Media For the past 150 years, economics has been treated as a social science in which economies are modeled as a circular flow of income between producers and consumers. In this “perpetual motion” of interactions between firms that produce and households that consume, little or no accounting is given of the flow of energy and materials from the environment and back again. In the standard economic model, energy and matter are completely recycled in these transactions, and economic activity is seemingly exempt from the Second Law of Thermodynamics. As we enter the second half of the age of oil, and as energy supplies and the environmental impacts of energy production and consumption become major issues on the world stage, this exemption appears illusory at best. In Energy and the Wealth of Nations, concepts such as energy return on investment (EROI) provide power...

Bioinformatics for Glycobiology and Glycomics: An Introduction PDF By:Claus-Wilhelm von der Lieth,Thomas Luetteke,Martin Frank Published on 2009-10-01 by John Wiley & Sons This book is the first to be dedicated to the bioinformatics of carbohydrates and glycoproteins. It provides an introduction to this emerging field of science both for the experimentalist working in glycobiology and glycomics, and also for the computer scientist looking for background information for the development of highly sophisticated algorithmic approaches. The book provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in the field, with reviews on databases, and the tools in use for analysis, interpretation, and prediction of the structures of complex carbohydrates, and demonstrates the value of bioinformatics for glycobiology. The availability of comprehensive databases and corresponding bioinformatics tools, to access and analyse the large amounts of experimental data relating to the structure of carbohydrates, w...
